Effenaar Park

The new building of the Effenaar is not only the Effenaar building, but also its nearest surroundings. A square has been realisted in front ot the main entrance of the Effenaar which suites the character and the functions of the building. The dark building is placed on a black pavement with sufficient possibilities to park bicycles and it is a gathering and meeting square.

The backside of the Effenaar has two main functions: a Dommel/natural garden with adjacent pavements on two levels and a logistic space with railings for loading and discharging. The natural garden and the renovated “Spoelhuisje” hold an important place. A puddle with open water is in the middle of the garden. A bridge with an observation post near the Dommel is built over the puddle. Originally it is a very wet place where seeping water comes to the surface. The grounds formerly hosted a damask and linen weaving mill which needed a lot of water for rinsing, the “Spoelhuisje”. Part of the old factory wall has been renovated and forms the partition with the redesigned Dommelstraat. A plank-bridge has been constructed which is floating above the deepened level of the garden, the pavement of the Effenaar.

The design for this Effenaar environmental plan has been designed by the Architects Office DLA+
