About the project

The relations between nature, mankind and urban space are recurrent topics in the works of Lia Chaia. Her statements - in the form of photos, collages, videos and installations – are “personal” in the sense that she visually relates herself physically to her subjects.

She is invited to present the video work, “Minhocão” which has been finished in 2007: In an indefinable space a woman (i.e. herself) is incessantly regurgitating images of high-rises. These have been taken in the street called “Minhocão” (i.e. Elevado Costa e Silva) in São Paulo, what is a three-kilometer-long elevated roadway, which connects São Paulo’s West Side to downtown. Along with the zeitgeist of the 1970s it was just built to handle the car traffic without any consideration of the residents, the urban landscape and ecological qualities.
