| Interview What was the first art/design/architecture work that impressed you? i remember as a teenager i was impressed by the work of Spanish sculptor Julio Gonzalez, who had at that time a big show in Berlin. How do you reflect on light as a material or media in your work? I use light as a sculptor, that means that I explore the light producing element/the lamp, the light and the shadow in relation to the intention I have in my sculptural work. As an example for this i see my work Escape on the Spot 3, 2006. Here the enlarged shadow of a small figure made by a bright light bulb is the main element of the piece, connected in space with the real situation. In my work Imaging the Future, 2008, I used a special torch that casts a circular shine on the wall and creates the imaginary setting for a sitting figure observing a sunset or rise. But I used also the very special form of small light bulbs as claws on gloves as a kind of mysterious functional body tool, connecting touching and illuminating/seeing. this i used in my work Inward Waiting, 2005. What was the guiding interest in your conceptual approach of your work which we will see during GLOW? At Glow we will see my work Longing for the Present, 2005, which shows the repeated process of an illuminated candle and its burning down through a hole in a metal console and the falldown of the candle with its extinguishing and the hit of the candle on the floor. This takes approximately one hour and is repeated after every falldown. While following the process the viewer is seeing and hearing, but the main demand for the viewer is his own concentration. I wanted to create a work that confronts the spectator with the deep felt moment of passing time in the condition of concentation on that passing by second by second. What made it interesting to work in Eindhoven? I look forward being in Eindhoven and discovering Glow! What kind of respond do you expect from the audience? I hope the audience can follow my intention of being and concentrating. |
