About the project

Nadine Rennert’s works open semantic abeyances to question representational qualities of physical reality.

She is invited to show the work “Sehnsucht nach Gegenwart” (translates as “Longing for Presence”), one of the few works in which she embodies light as a material: A small corner shelf serves as a candle holder with two holes in which conical candles are burning. As long as they burn there is light and time to see. The longer they burn the deeper they slide into the whole until they are too slim to be hold by the shelf and fall. Over time the fallen candles pile up underneath the shelf. Although they all undergo the same procedure every candle ends up in a unique shape – depending on their slight differences in material, their burning time and its events (ex. wind) and the environment they fall into.
