In the 13th century the medieval “St. Catharinakerk” was built. Since then people have been burried in and around it. During archaeological research in recent years some of the genetical materials from several centuries was found.
The building was seriously damaged by fire, storm and war in the 15th and 16th century and it was demolished in 1860 to make room for a new church. In 1867 the new St. Catharinakerk was inaugurated. It’s architect of the building was P. Cuypers, famous for his works in Amsterdam the “Rijksmuseum” and the “Centraal Station”.
