About the project

Project: Hommage to the square
Location: St. Catharinakerk

Since 2001 fine artists Eva-Maria Joeressen and sound composer Klaus Kessner co-operate to develop site- and time-specific light- and sound-environments.

The space of St. Catharinakerk and St. Catharinaplein are essential in the city’s history since the 13th century. A floor plan of the medieval church can be found in the pavement in front of the present one, which was inaugurated in 1867. During GLOW the site- and time-specific intervention by Eva-Maria Joeressen and Klaus Kessner inverts the process of 700 years of the city’s expansion. The audio-visuals of “homage to the square” are based on a drawn map of Eindhoven which has been divided in equally sized squares. Each of the grids is transformed into signs, sounds and timelines. Projected into the architectural space of the St. Catharinakerk the digital flow of information moves the space.
