Multifaceted artist
Daniel Schlaepfer began his career as a sculptor. Progressively, light
became his material of choice in the making of sculptural installations,
mirroring objects, and image-boxes. Initially trained in the natural
sciences, his work shows a fascination with natural phenomena, as
much as with human understandings of the natural realm.
In his installations, light becomes a means of questioning
– through the production of poetic images – generally
assumed understandings of the world that surrounds us. Aimed at triggering
new perceptions, his work moves from the domestic microcosm of a garden
to the universal realm of that Milky Way. Three main strategies are
at play: revealing objects, carefully placed in natural settings,
serve to magnify nature's inherent configuration (Paysage d’éternité,
1997); variable lighting systems can change the way architecture appears
(Variations, 2006); interactive interventions modify the way we look
at a landscape (L'étoile d'Aï, 2004). The technological
aspect of the lighting devices used – dichroic glass, leds,
or optical fiber – remains secondary. Natural motifs stand out,
reassessing nature's secrets.
Since 1981, Daniel Schlaepfer’s work has been extensively shown
in Switzerland and internationally, both in group shows and solo exhibitions.
He also counts numerous collaborations with architects.
