Interview

"Without the internet my portraits would not exist"

Personal Data "The intention of a portrait is to display a physical resemblance, but also to express the character and the personality of the portrayed person. The text portrait gives more information by writing line by line the faces of people through their own biography. In 2002 I’ve created one of my first “Text Portraits” out of the text Wikipedia “David Beckham” with a typeface of white on black as a visual reference to the layout of the DOS-mode. The first “Text Portraits” were exhibited in museums, metro stations, historical places, showcases of cafes, to refer to the public character of the work. Now search engines are developing fast and personal data are freely available, “Text Portrait” has turned into a web-art-project".

Internet "The internet is fascinating, inspiring, democratic, anonymous, unreliable ... Many users believe everything they read on the internet, while the quality of the material does not always has been controlled. Internet is so woven into our daily lives, that our first impression of a person does not rely on a face-to-face encounter anymore, but on “Google”. The internet is a reflection of our society and should therefore be more than a simple source of information. “Text Portrait” is an artistic interpretation of internet-based personal information.

Confused "’We are being listed, ranked, categorized and evaluated more and more, we are increasingly being ‘portrayed’, but in an invisible way. But our portrait itself is hardly ever seen. Who are we, do we feel controlled, are we honest with each other? Text Portrait / MISSING will probably causes the public feelings of confusion and let them think about the unreliability of public information and how to deal with".
