De Bijenkorf (18 septemberplein)

The re-designing of the 18 Septemberplein is in full swing. In the spring of 2009 the square will have the charisma and quality that fits Eindhoven. A mosaic of high quality concrete, glass and water elements will be placed in the middle of the square. Lighting will be placed beneath the 240 glass elements and as a result the square will become an illuminated stage in the evening.
This lighting is part of an ambitious lighting project, which matches the ambition of the city. The lighting of the square is a design by Philips. The water elements provide a beautiful final chord at the end of the square. In addition sustainable and qualitative natural stones will be laid up to the facades of the buildings. Between these natural stones trees will be planted to give the 18 Septemberplein a natural look. Two of the five former artworks of the Piazzaplein will be placed next to the Bijenkorf.
A bicycle store will be located beneath the mosaic for approximately 1,800 bicycles. The glass elements on the square will provide the bicyle store with extra light during daytime. The entrances of the bicycle store are conical objects. Moving paths will make sure the bicycle store will be easy to access. An important detail in the bicycle store is the visability of the Woenselse Stadspoort and the history of this location.

Part of the masterplan 18 Septemberplein are two special architectural buildings. A large “blob” belonging to the development of Admirant and a smaller “blob” at the beginning of the Hermanus Boexstraat. Both “blobs” will be ready by the end of 2009.

The 18 Septemberplein is a design by the renowned Italian architect Massimiliano Fuksas.
