Interview

“City environments should have as much light-based art works as sculptures”

Intriguing medium “Light is an integral part of all my work, I have been working with light as an architectural lighting designer and artist for the past thirteen years. Artificial light is an intriguing medium and it lends itself to a hand on explorative approach. It’s a cross between art and science. My keen interest also lies in sustainable design in work and leisure environments and in the relationship between design, technology, music and science on raising the public’s awareness and appreciation for more creative, interesting and energy efficient built environments and art works”.

Public space “Cities and how they are expressed at night is the source of much of my inspiration. Often a beautiful piece of music and nature can evoke new ideas for my work. I live in Sydney in Paddington in a unique place that has a small forest that I can see from my Japanese hut that also looks onto a swimming pool. It creates a wonderful setting to create work. I have a special interest in public space. I think we are in the renaissance period of artificial light at night and city environments should have light-based artworks just as much as statues and sculptures are for the day time experience. Cities of the future will provide nourishing spaces for the public that will unmask emotion through the mind to lift their mood with light. Hopefully the audience will be intrigued by “The Veil”, it’s a very new idea made real”.
