About the project

Project: Kijken / To look
Location: TD-gebouw

Max Sudhues disjoints visuals and their possible realities by exploring the phenomena of human percipiency. Whatever the eye detects is instantly aligned by the brain with what is already stored in it, i.e. any interpretation of any visual moment happens in relation to forgone experiences and former insights. The human chance to see something new or unknown is quite small.

Max Sudhues works are set in the interdependency of visual structures and their options of human cognition focusing on the unknown. The visuals he generates are images in which the source of the image is not necessary affiliated with what appears and what it seems to be. As his environments allow comparing the image and its source as well as to reflect the lighting conditions, he raises the doubt about visual realities and at the same time widens their territories.

Project: Kijken / To Look

In about 40 of the empty rooms of the TD-Gebouw, which accommodated parts of Eindhoven’s city administration until the end of 2008, Max Sudhues installs an arrangement of a glass, filled with water, moved by a water pump, seen as shadow through a window in the light of an overhead-projector. On the windows facing the river Dommel these visuals, which emerge from the interplay of space and light, rhythm and materials, can be observed.
