Eindhoven had five city halls in the last hundred years. The latest one
has been built in the 1960s. The square, formerly called the „Studentenwei“
(students paddock) is located at the meeting point of two waterways –
the river “De Dommel” and the “Stadsgracht”. The
“Begijnenhof”, with characteristic tiny decayed maisonettes
was located at the northern side of the square . During and after World
War II these houses were destroyed to make room for the Stadhuisplein.
In the middle of the 1990 underneath the city hall square a car parking
was built.
