Centrum Kunstlicht in de Kunst “Change of the Century”

In this center for artificial light art opposite the Witte Dame building visitors can experience 360 days a year "how artists exploit the artistic possibilities of artificial light”. From November 6th a new exhibition "Change of the Century" will be launched.

Artificial light as an artistic material
"For this exhibition we have worked together with the SMAK, the leading and internationally renowned museum for contemporary art in Gent, Belgium," says Loes Venker, responsible for education and public relations. "For the first time light artworks of famous names like Bruce Naumann, Dan Flavin and Jacques Charlier will now be exhibited in the Netherlands". The exhibition "Change of the Century" refers to the importance of artificial light (incandescent, fluorescent, neon) for society. "Artificial light is an invention with great social impact, it extends our days and makes a 24-hour economy possible. Since the 60s of the last century artificial light is widely used as an artistic material. The major practitioners of light art include those working with neon, as Dan Flavin. His work is regarded as the beginning of Minimal Art: works composed of simple and sometimes found materials. Flavin explores topics related to light and space and is known for his sculptures with fluorescent tubelight”.

Darkness
The artworks are exhibited in the dark with a minimum of additional lighting. Each artwork has a separate light source and is a landmark in the dark. This creates a storyline that interconnects the works.

Special opening hours during the GLOW festival, Friday and Saturday from 19.00 to 24.00 hrs, Sunday to Thursday from 19.00 to 23.00 hrs. Normal opening hours Tuesday to Sunday from 12.00 till 16.00 hrs.

Especially for GLOW the facade of the building will be illuminated in a special way by students of the international exchange program GLOW Light Lab, from 11th until 15th of November.
