GLOW 2011 'Illusion and Reality" Light Art in Eindhoven
The facade of the City Hall as a rough canvas painted with strokes
of light, a concrete building transformed into a gothic cathedral,
‘fire flies’ tucked away into blue mist that communicate
through light pulses, a futuristic forest of lighted columns, floating
light in turbid water. From November 5th till November 12th the innercity
of Eindhoven reveals itself differently due to the special light installations
of GLOW. The light art route has a length of more than four kilometers
long and starts at the GLOW Café, during the event housed in
the former post office next to the Central station. Last year, the
light festival attracted a record number of 250,000 visitors from
home and abroad.
‘Imagine and Reality’ is the theme of the sixth edition
of the light festival, which has free access. The theme has inspired
artists into making surprising light installations, often site or
place specific. Some entering the intersection of art and science
by using projections, lighting effects and sounds to create illusions
which no longer separate illusion from reality. Others seek interaction
with the audience so they beome part of the constantly changing
artwork.
Impressive
GLOW connects in the route two celebrating institutions: the 55-year
old Technical University Eindhoven (TU/e) and the 75-year old Van
Abbe Museum. This is also symbolized by a laser beam connecting
both institutions in the air. Another jubilee in the City of Light
is Philips. For 120 years the company has its base in Eindhoven
and now Philips has adopted a large GLOW project. In ‘Beauty
of stagnation’ lighting designer Michel Suk fully lightens
a number of buildings and landscape features at the TU/e campus.
The colors of large-scale installations slowly change or patterns
become visible that alternately prevail chaos and order. Because
the light programs are linked together, a stunning series of illuminated
buildings, trees and water reveal. The art work suits the theme
"Livable Cities", which Philips supports to promote quality
of life in an urban environment. The centerpiece of this extensive
installation is the Kennispoort building that serves as scenery
for a co-production of Michel Suk and composer Bart van Dongen in
which light and sound are perfectly integrated.
Besides large projections GLOW also accomodates less spectacular
work and experimental lighting applications. By involving primary
school children, students and young artists into light projects
organizer CityDynamiek indicates that the light festival also has
a laboratory function and that GLOW provides a stage for talent
to develop themselves in the light art.
