1. Blob the Bulb
‘Eindhoven is not done with the electric light bulb yet by any means.’
Unfortunately though, the end is in sight for the incandescent bulb. Before it disappears completely from our lives, Dirk van Poppel and Jan Fabel pay tribute to this all-rounder. They have chosen to name this tribute Blob the bulb. The new light that shines from this projection gives the old, original light source shape and meaning. BLOB amazes and enchants you by portraying the unpredictability of early electric lighting. Creating this installation was a challenge in itself because it is a complex thing to construct: no single surface is the same. This temporary monument to the beauty of this original form of lighting is on display in Eindhoven during GLOW. And where better to place a monument that evokes that feeling of pride than at the foot of the Lichttoren? Does anybody else harbour melancholy feelings for a possible future without incandescent bulbs? We certainly do…

Dirk van Poppel and Jan Fabel both started their career in their beloved Eindhoven. As they grew up, the 'Lichttoren' became a beacon of light: a source of light. Nowadays, they both work in the field of design, light and video projection. In the '80s, their passionate career started by initiating 'Video Cyclope' at artist centre 'De Fabriek'. Video artists investigated the boundaries of the possibilites of video. And until today, this is still their main goal. Searching for those boundaries what light images can do, to create something that seems impossible at first...and against all odds bring it to life. Images that where in the back of their minds for years, to make them tangible and use them to tell a story.
